Pythagoras’ Daughter

American and Aboriginal Shamanism

Nothing I have ever seen with my eyes

was so clear and bright as what my vision showed me;

and no words that I have ever heard with my ears

were like the words I heard.

I did not have to remember these things;

they have remembered themselves all these years.

It was as I grew older that the meanings came clearer and clearer out of the pictures and the words;

and even now I know that more was shown to me

than I can tell..

Shamanism

Shamanism refers to a range of traditional beliefs and practices concerned with communication with the spirit world. Shamanistic traditions have existed throughout the world since prehistoric times.

Some anthropologists and religious scholars define a shaman as an intermediary between the natural and spiritual world, who travels between worlds in a state of trance. Shamans have been described by Ripinsky-Naxon as, “people who have a strong interest in their surrounding environment and the society of which they are a part.”

Shamanism is based on the premise that the visible world is pervaded by invisible forces or spirits that affect the lives of the living.

I have seen as if someone

Opens a door

and the door is closed.

I have had nightmares,

But not ordinary ones.

I have seen myself

Introduced through a

Hole in the air,

and I went through an

Immense, immense void.

Eduardo. Modern Peruvian Shaman
